Permits ready for unique large-scale circular food production facility
Johannas has received environmental and fish farming permits to produce fish, vegetables and insects on a large scale in a new closed circular facility in Morgongåva.
Johannas Stadsodlingar AB plans to start building the new facility in the summer of 2024. It will be the world's first where fish breeding, vegetable cultivation and insect cultivation take place in an integrated, automated cycle, with uniquely high efficiency in recirculation of water, nutrients and energy.

The permits are for a production of up to 40 tons of rainbow trout, 500 tons of vegetables and 100 tons of insects per year. With a patent pending nutrient recycling system, Johannas expects to be able to increase vegetable production further from the same nutrient flow.

Johannas designs and operates circular and natural-like cultivation facilities for the production of vegetables, fish and insects for fish feed. The various parts of the production form a water-based cycle and its own ecosystem. The heart of the system is a symbiosis between vegetables and fish in a natural bacterial culture, so-called aquaponics. The fish provide nourishment to bacteria and the vegetables that are grown, which in turn clean the water for the fish. The vegetable residues that arise in the production will be used to grow insects that are used in the system as fish feed. Plant waste also from other producers is taken care of by the insects in the cultivation.
